New trends in front end development

In the month of March I embarked on a job search as a Mid to Senior PHP Developer. What I realised is that the path my career had led me through the past 2 years may have made ma miss out on all the magical things happening on the internet. Let me elaborate. I touted myself as a component/module or plugin developer for the most common PHP frameworks and content management systems. This was all pretty good for the companies that I worked for that usually worked with those common php frameworks. I however always saw myself as a back-end developer and that I had little front end experience. What I came to realise is that the term backend developer is slowly becoming redundant. With the web pushing for user centered web applications that are as responsive as desktop applications. This means that technologies such as Javascript HTML5 and CSS3 are becoming part of the required skillset of a developer. Another more important aspect of this mix is that to have desktop like interaction is that updates to the interface should reflect data stored on our server data stores. This is where technologies like node.js, angular.js and ext.js and the all popular simple data transfer format JSON come in. Each of these technologies is a step in achieving 1) Falling out of the trend by spending a large part of my career being a component/module or plugin developer for the most common PHP frameworks and content management systems. Note: 1) I googled trends in front end php development and limited the search to South Africa using the filters and my linkein profile was the first result. This prompted me to really look at my skillset and try to catch up on what I was missing all this time. 2) the first website I came across was by a developer who had experienced exactly what I had just realised.
